How To Care for Your Shark Fin® Shears
Due to the unique high quality and blade design, SHARK-FIN shears must be maintained as outlined below. Care and maintenance is the key element in achieving maximum performance from your SHARK-FIN shears.
Please note: Failure to perform proper care and maintenance on a daily basis will likely result in a damaged shear and unsatisfactory performance. Please take the time to carefully read the following information. Maintained properly, your SHARK-FIN shears will perform incredibly well & should last throughout your career. This information is the result of many years of study and testing. The methods and techniques are proven, and ensure that your SHARK-FIN shears will perform "like new" for many years to come.
- Daily Cleaning & Lubrication
Using a soft cloth towel saturated with scissor oil, thoroughly wipe the inside of the blades of your SHARK-FIN shear after every customer. This will reduce buildup of chemicals and debris, and will also keep the blades lubricated to reduce friction caused by "metal to metal" contact. Proper lubrication and blade adjustment will extend the life of the blades and reduce the amount of times that your shear will need to be sharpened. If you own a swivel shear, lubricate the swivel joint as needed. - Weekly Cleaning and Lubrication
Once a week, carefully open to a 90 degree angle. Loosen the adjustment knob enough so that the blades are loose enough to fit a folded paper towel between the pivot point to push out any hair particles and or debris that has built up from the weeks use. After the area between the blades are clean, put one or two drops of top quality scissors oil provided with your SHARK-FIN Shears into the "joint." It assists the cleaning process by washing out dirt and debris from in-between the blades. DO NOT PUT SCISSOR OIL DIRECTLY UNDER THE PIVOT POINT KNOB, only between the blades. - Daily Adjusting Tension (Balancing)
Adjusting tension is an important part of getting the best results from your SHARK-FIN shears. Turn the dial from the ridged area around the side, not from the top.
If the tension is too loose, it will allow your SHARK-FIN shears to fold the hair. If it is too tight, it will cause unnecessary wear and user fatigue. To test for tension, hold the shears with the adjustment knob facing you and the thumb handle in your left hand. With the shear perfectly straight, lift up on the ring finger to open the blades half way. Then, let the ring finger handle go. The blades should close 2/3 of the way. At the end of the shear you should have about an 1/2 inch opening. If they are still closing all the way, repeat the process until they only close 2/3 of the way if they hang open too much loosen the adjustment knob until the proper opening is achieved. - Storage
When your SHARK-FIN shears are not being used, keep blades in a closed position. This will reduce the chance of nicking and accidental damage to the blades. How you store your SHARK-FIN shears is very important. For adequate protection and ease of travel, you should store your SHARK-FIN shears in the case provided. They should be secured in one position. - Sharpening
